Superb carved mahogany tester bedstead from Charleston, South Carolina.
The suports are tapered ribbed posts enclosed at the base with acanthus leaf carving resting on waterleaf carving on a reel on a ribbed urn form. The headboard is original and a superb pediment form.
This post is exactly like the one shown in "Charleston Furniture" by Milby Burton, figure 25.
We are just now making hangings for this bed to exemplify it's neo-classical form.
This bed can also use a queen sized mattress. You'll note it is 54 inches wide so we hang a custom box spring slightly above and inside the rails, then we use a custom cut corner mattress that hangs over the rails 2" to achieve the full 60" queen size. When the bed is dressed the overhang is invisible.
