Superb Small Bilbao Mirror

No. R16196

Superb small Bilbao mirror absolutely complete and original.

The smallest one I’ve seen (10 1/4“ x 16 1/2” original beveled mirror).

The frame is two level flat marble with beaded gold molding at the edges, the corners are raised with a centered brass rosette.

This mirror is the epitome of Neo-classic design with urns and floral tracery.

When American ship captains left for the China trade (or to trade with European countries) they would go across the Atlantic helped by the Gulf Stream that came up the coast and flowed east at Cape Cod.  Located at exactly the same latitude as Portsmouth New Hampshire (43º North), without hardly steering they would arrive directly across the Atlantic (directly where the Gulf Steam took them) to stop at Bilbao Spain to get fuel and fresh vegetables and food before continuing their journey.   The shop owners in Bilboa quickly figured out that these clever, wealthy Yankee ship captains would buy good things to sell or decorate their large homes in the major cities on the east coast.
