Important double portrait of Mrs. Henry (Jane Francis Loring) Gray and her daughter, Emily E. (later Mrs. Henry Denver), by Joseph Whiting Stock of Springfield. (1815-1855). Stretcher measurements are 42.5" high by 36" wide. Circa 1840. Unsigned. Stretchers and frame original to the painting.
Reference: Painting was cleaned and revarnished by Morton Bradley of Arlington, Massachusetts. It has not been relined. Descended from Mrs. Henry Gray to her daughter Emily, then to her grandaughter, Miss Edna K. Denver. Miss Edna Denver donated the portrait to the Springfield Museum of Fine Art in October, 1947 where it stayed ten years before being deaccesioned into the private market.
