Wonderful Pair of Portraits.
The first portrait is a man who is holding a draftsman calipers & some type of ruler rests on the book plus an early steam engine train is visible through the curtained window. The book by his elbow is entitled “Engineer and Machinist's Assistant”. The other is his family; the woman is holding a baby with a large rattle sitting on a classical sofa. There has been some minor in painting where there must have been paint loss. Unsigned. Blackie published the first edition of the book in the painting in 1847, the second “new and improved” edition was published in Glasgow in 1856. Note also the exquisite details of satins, laces, & jewelry as well as the locomotive and engineer implements.
