Neoclassical Girandole Mirror

No. R13885

Unusually large and superb Neoclassical carved giltwood girandole (convex) mirror with anthemion carved crest and robust acanthus carved frame.  The circular inner frame carving is a laurel wreath enclosing an reeded ebonized bezel.

This mirror is easily one of the largest and boldest neo-classical statements we’ve seen.

In the early 19th century high end gilding was also used a play on shiny and mat areas with the intention of increasing the impact of the carving.   Note the highlighted central stems of the leaves and anthemion.
