Superb large gilded pier mirror made by Issac Platt.
There is evidence, on the back, that this mirror was hung both vertically and horizontally early on.
Though we had to do gold leaf restoration to this mirror there was ample evidence that there were two different colors of gold, which we matched.
Reference: “The Mirror Book, English, American & European” by Herbert F. Schiffer, page 239, plate 638 and 639. Also, Antiques Magazine, April 1961, page 357.
Schiffer says” Gilded wood and gesso, American, bearing the label of Isaac L. Platt of New York, circa 1830. “Isaac Platt (1793 to 1875) mad mirrors and frames between 1815 and 1860.”
The mirror Schiffer has pictured is nearly a twin to this one. The elements of the on in Schiffer and in the Magazine Antiques are identical to this mirror. The only difference being in overall size.
